History of Dolls and Their Clothes
The earliest dolls were either used for ritual purposes, but dolls as toys were not uncommon either. Dolls were used as toys among many ancient peoples. Innu "tea dolls" were carried by little girls while traveling. Other dolls from ancient peoples include Inuit dolls clothed with furs and rag dolls. Dolls like these were made from wood, ivory, or wax.
Rag dolls were among the earliest toy dolls. The oldest rag doll was found in a child's grave dating from 300 BC. African slaves were known to have made rag dolls for their children, too. The Dutch and the Germans developed the peg wooden doll. These dolls were designed for poor children to play with. These kinds of dolls were often clothed with scraps of clothing.
During the Industrial Period, dolls became collectors' items. Dolls from this period were polished and dressed elegantly. German bisque dolls are particularly made from unglazed bisque porcelain. The Parian doll is similar to German bisque dolls except that its hair is molded as part of the body.
These kinds of dolls evolved into adult fashion dolls and crying baby dolls. Nowadays, they are made of plastic or composite resin. However, there are collectible ceramic and wax dolls still being manufactured. Along with the dolls themselves, there are doll clothes being sold in toy stores, like clothes for american girl doll.
